     When you are employed with South Padre Island Fire Department, not only do you get to work on an Island, you also get the chance to work in a very diverse environment! The South Padre Island Fire Department is not only a fire suppression agency, we offer emergency medical services, ocean rescue, and public safety diving. This grants firefighters, with the proper training, the option to participate in more fields of practice than other neighboring agencies. This also offers the employee a chance for overtime.


Pay Rate for a Firefighter/Paramedic is $15.41/hour. After successful completion of one year orientation period pay will be changed to $17.68/hour.

There are plenty of opportunities for overtime as well as built in overtime due to work schedule.

Educational Opportunities

As an employee of the South Padre Island Fire Department, there are numerous opportunities for professional development.

  • SPIFD allows it's members to enroll in numerous Texas Commission on Fire Protection courses, paid for by the department.
  • Being a Texas firefighter means college tuition exemption towards a fire science degree! Further information for tuition exemption can be found here.
  • The City shall reimburse the cost of tuition and mandatory fees for courses which an employee takes through a school or institution that is approved by the City Manager if funds are
    available. ($2500.00 cap per fiscal year per employee). Tuition assistance is available after 12 months of employment.
