Training
Members of the Dive Team took advantage of the incredibly calm seas and excellent visibility to conduct some Dive Training in the Gulf. Crews dove on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Artificial Reef just off Boca Chica Beach. A Coast Guard boat provided the "topside spotters. Visibility was excellent and allowed the team to work on several evolutions.









National Night Out
SPI first responders are preparing for the upcoming 3rd annual "National Night Out set for October 2 at the Island Baptist Church parking lot from 6-8 pm. National Night Out was introduced in 1984 in an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts. Since its successful inception it has expanded in many communities to include other departments from local government further solidifying the relationship between citizens and the organizations that serve them. Maintenance
The Public Works crews and landscaping contractor continued pruning and weeding the plants at the entrance medians. They should complete this project this week. The Public Works sign crew is replacing the faded stop signs and street name signs along Laguna Boulevard.









Scenic City
The City of South Padre Island was awarded the Silver Certification from Scenic City. They will be presenting the City with this recognition at a November City Council meeting. The Scenic City Certification Program will proudly feature South Padre Island in their marketing material and on their website.









Recycling Drop Off Site Moves to Old City Hall
The Recycling Drop Off site for the City of South Padre Island is changing as of Saturday, September 29, 2012. The new location will be 4501 Padre Boulevard (Old City Hall). Items may be dropped off from 8-11 a.m. every Saturday. Recyclable items include: newspaper, cardboard, office paper, aluminum, tin and plastic. To offer better recycling service, please:
  • compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced
  • in size remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.

Sandcastle Days
Meet Master Sand Sculptor Karen Fralich during the 25th Annual Sand Castle Days from October 5-7. Karen has been creating sand sculptures for 18 years. She began her sculpting career at age 14 in a pottery studio in Guelph, Ontario. In 1994, a professional sand Sculptor invited her to help on a small sand sculpture in a local mall. Karen was immediately addicted and spent the next four years learning the rudiments of sand sculpture. Her work takes her around the world, collaborating with her large extended family of wonderful sculptor friends. To date, Karen has competed in 92 Masters Level International Sand Sculpture contests. She is a four-time World Champion and four-time North American Champion. She is the only woman to ever win the Solo World Championship.

Recyclable items can be taken to Island Baptist Church every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.

Toastmasters Wanted
The Islanders Toastmasters International Club is now open to the public and invites all to participate and develop valuable communication and leadership skills. "The Islanders" meet every Thursday at 12:00pm at the City Hall Board Room. Animal Control
Lost or found an animal on the Island? The South Padre Island's Animal Control is working together with the Friends of Animals Rescue Group. Their foster based recovery center helps to reunite lost and found pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue will make every effort to reunite lost animals with their families. Animals that are not reunited will be vetted by Friends of Animal Rescue and placed with new families. Lost or found a pet please call (956) 761-PETS.
