Texas Associated Press Holds Annual Convention at SPI Apr. 4-6

Daily newspaper editors, reporters and photographers from throughout Texas will meet at South Padre Island this weekend for the annual convention of the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.
The 85-year-old organization represents the editors of all newspapers in the state that are members of The Associated Press. More than 75 people from 35 daily newspapers from as far away as El Paso, Wichita Falls and Tyler will be in attendance, including representatives from all of the state's metropolitan papers. The group's sessions will be held April 4-6 at The Pearl and Schlitterbahn resorts.
Guest speakers will include state Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic candidate for governor; Brian Carovillano, AP's managing editor for U.S. news; Juliet V. Garcia, president of the University of Texas-Brownsville, and South Padre Island Mayor Robert Pinkerton.
The meeting also will include discussions about covering the border, Freedom of Information efforts, and ways to increase and improve the use of video on newspaper websites and apps. There will be networking sessions with college journalism students and a charity auction to help  fund the group's Buster Haas scholarships for minority interns. The group also will present its awards recognizing the best in Texas newspaper journalism from 2013.
