Official Weather Update

The National Weather Service is currently saying Alex will enter Mexico about 75-80 miles south of Brownsville early Thursday morning as a category 2 hurricane.

South Padre Island Mayor Bob Pinkerton is suggesting a voluntary relocation for people on South Padre Island. "This is based on the Monday morning projections about the track of Alex, which would bring the storm into our area early Thursday morning."

An emergency declaration has been issued by Mayor Pinkerton for South Padre Island. The city's emergency operations center has been active all day.

"This is a potentially dangerous storm," said Mayor Pinkerton. "Citizens should monitor updates through radio, television, Internet, etc. Updates will be placed on the City's official website, www.southpadretexas.gov and on our South Padre Island Emergency Management Facebook page."

Residents/businesses should begin storm preparations, especially securing loose outside items, including hanging plants. These items can become projectiles in high winds. Empty sandbags are available at the Public Works garage behind 4501 Padre Boulevard. Residents may receive up to five bags, businesses up to 10 bags. The distribution hours are 8-8pm. Special needs residents requiring assistance in relocating off the Island should call 956-761-6456 for assistance.

There are no current plans for either causeway or beach closings.

Visitors planning trips to South Padre Island this weekend should monitor weather conditions.

Public works crews have been moving trash barrels, mobimats and flag signs off the beach Monday.

Hurricane reentry stickers are no longer available from the South Padre Island Fire Department.

A hurricane watch has been issued for our area. A voluntary relocation of high profile vehicles on South Padre Island has been called for by Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos.
