Alex is still forecast to enter Mexico around 50 miles south of Brownsville at around 7pm Wednesday night as a category 1 hurricane, according to the latest information from the National Weather Service. It should be at hurricane strength later this morning. The storm has sped up, currently moving about 12 miles per hour.

The Island should experience continuous rain by Wednesday afternoon with tropical storm force winds. There is potential for gusts up to hurricane strength Wednesday night. Heavy rain is expected in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for the Texas coast from Baffin Bay to the mouth of the Rio Grande and south to La Cruz, Mexico.

South Padre Island Mayor Bob Pinkerton said "based on the information received, there will be no mandatory evacuation. Citizens and visitors should continue to monitor updates through radio, television, internet, etc. Updates will be placed on the City's official website, www.southpadretexas.gov, on www.spiemergency.com and on our South Padre Island Emergency Management Facebook page."

The Queen Isabella Causeway IS open. Any change in the status of the causeway is the responsibility of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Their decision is based on wind speed.

Empty sandbags are available at the Public Works garage behind 4501 Padre Boulevard. Residents may receive up to five bags, businesses up to 10 bags. The distribution hours are 8am-8pm. Special needs residents requiring assistance in relocating off the Island should call 956-761-6456 for assistance.

Visitors planning trips to South Padre Island this weekend should monitor weather conditions.

Hurricane reentry stickers are no longer available from the South Padre Island Fire Department.
