6/30 - Tropical Storm Warning

Official Weather Update

ABased on increasing winds, the Texas Department of Public Safety may close the Queen Isabella Causeway if conditions warrant that decision. Crossing the causeway is strongly not recommended because of winds, wind gusts and heavy rain. If Texas DPS does decide to close the causeway, there may be little notice. This is a decision of the Texas Department of Public Safety, totally based on conditions and protecting the safety of everyone in the area. If the causeway is closed, it will not be reopened until after the storm passes.

Hurricane Alex has slowed a bit and is expected to make landfall 120 miles south of Brownsville as potentially a category 2 storm about midnight Wednesday night.

City officials urge people on the Island to avoid travel on the Island at this time, keeping roadways clear for public safety vehicles. South Padre Island is experienceing minor street flooding.

Storm updates will be be made through area media and also placed on the City's official website, www.southpadretexas.gov, on www.spiemergency.com and on our South Padre Island Emergency Management Facebook page.
