Event Description:

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the devastating attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. The South Padre Island Police and Fire departments will host a ceremony on Sunday, September 11, 2011 in remembrance of the events that took place on that tragic day and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the attacks. The memorial event will begin at 8:30am at the South Padre Island City Hall located at 4601 Padre Blvd.

The 10th Anniversary memorial event will build on a timeline of events that made September 11, 2001 a day that will never be forgotten. Speakers for the memorial event include Police Chief Randy Smith, Fire Chief Burney Baskett, former City Council member Rick Ridolfi, Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton and City Manager Joni Clarke.

The artifact from the World Trade Center tower that was donated to the South Padre Island Fire Department will be unveiled at the event. The 6ft. long, 1750 lb. "I" beam will be on display for the public to view and touch. Once the memorial event concludes, the historical artifact will remain on display at City Hall until its incorporation at the new Fire and Emergency Services Station that it's scheduled to be completed by spring 2012.
