SPI City Council Meeting Summary for June 4, 2014

The City of South Padre Island held its Regular Called Council Meeting on Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr., pulled Item 5.f out of Consent Agenda at Council member Alex Avalos' request to allow for discussion. The Council approved the Consent Agenda, consisting of items 5.a-5.d  After discussion, the Council unanimously approved Item 5.f, second and final reading of Ordinance No. 14-08 amending Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances to add Section 18-19.3, prohibiting parking on the streets west of Laguna Boulevard in the “E” District unless the vehicle displays a hurricane return sticker; providing for exceptions for delivery and service vehicles, provisions for visitor and landscaping permits in the right-of-way.

For Item 6, the Council received funding requests from: Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Madre, El Paseo Arts Foundation, Friends of Animal Rescue, Friends of the Port Isabel Library, Sea Turtle, Inc., and the Valley Proud Environmental Council; no action was taken on this item.

Beach Circle access, located between Sheepshead & Pompano St., will undergo improvements with the Council's approval of Item 8 to award a contract for structural engineering services for the design of an emergency vehicle concrete drive over to Green, Rubiano & Associates, and authorizing the City Manager to negotiate associated fees. The project will include design and construction for an approximately 200-ft. long concrete drive over, which will increase beach access, public safety, and protect the dune habitat in that area by isolating the foot and vehicle traffic to a particular path. The structure will be designed at a width of 16-ft. to accommodate vehicles and provide a pedestrian lane.
