City Council Meeting Summary for Jan. 15, 2014

The City of South Padre Island held its Regular Called Council Meeting Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. issued a proclamation for the January 2014 Children's Book of the Month: “Chop Chop: The Kid's Guide to Cooking Real Food With Your Family” by Edward Miller. The Council approved Consent Agenda Items 5.a. Consent Agenda Item 5.b was broken into two separate motions; first, the Council approved invoices submitted, excluding those of Broaddus & Associates and Gignac & Associates. Then, Councilman Barry Patel moved to withhold invoices for payment to Broaddus & Associates, and Gignac & Associates pending additional information; the motion failed. Consent Agenda Item 5.c, Approve correction of minutes of November 13, 2013 Special City Council Meeting, was tabled.
 
The Council approved to allocate $425,000 from excess reserve funds to be added to the revised Machete, Inc. marketing plan. They also approved to allocate $50,00 from excess reserve funds to be added to the 2013/2014 Convention & Visitors Bureau marketing fund for tradeshow fees, travel expenses and familiarization (FAM) tours.
 
Robert Fudge and Murray Meggison were appointed to the Economic Development Board of Directors for a two-year term expiring December 31, 2015.
 
The Council approved Resolution No. 2014-01 creating the Ordinance Review Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of reviewing and making recommendations to the City Council regarding possible amendments to the South Padre Island Code of Ordinance; and give initial direction on chapter of Code of Ordinances to begin reviewing.
 
A contract was approved with Mejia & Rose for the design phase of park located at 6100 Padre Boulevard near the Travelodge site.
 
The Council approved a budget amendment for funding match requirements to have the Texas Emergency Task Force deploy and operate a Type-1 Mobile Medical Unit during Spring Break 2014. The City would contribute $20,000 for the project; the State would contribute approximately $200,000.
