Hotel Occupancy Tax

Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) is collected for short-term rental stays of less than 30 consecutive days which includes Hotel/Motel stays, and residential rental units, i.e., house, condo, apartment and bedroom stays.

Steps to Register for a short-term rental (STR) permit

To register your property correctly, complete each step in the order they are listed.

  • Apply for an account with MuniServices to pay the City/County portion of Hotel Tax (11%)*
  • Apply for a Texas Taxpayer ID to pay the State portion of Hotel Tax (6%)*
  • Register for a (STR) permit with the City**
  • LIST the permit number in all advertisements of the registered property
  • File Hotel Occupancy Tax monthly with MuniServices and the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts

*First two bullets should be completed the same day if you do not already have accounts established with these entities.

**A MuniServices account number and Cameron County Appraisal District Property identification (CCAD PID) are required.

On January 1, 2017, the Hotel Occupancy Tax rate increased to 17%. The new rate is broken down as follows:

City HOT 8.5%

City Venue Tax 2%

County Venue Tax 0.5%

State HOT 6%

Total HOT 17%
